Two Zeros find a likely target... |
3 Image series: In 1943 the PBY became the first plane to carry retro - rockets.
(Note the shadow. This is over the target). |
Break! |
The rockets fired to the rear. When launched with
the plane at the proper speed, they would impact the water where the plane was at time of
launch |
Three is most definitely a crowd... |
To the best of my knowledge they were never used on
ground targets. These images show the precision with which they fell. |
Getting some hits in with the twin machine guns in the
nose. |
I get cold just looking at this one.... |
Oops! It looks like turnabout is fair play... The
AI had trouble with how slow the PBY |
Soviet GST. (No, that isn't oil blown on the port engine,
it just hasn't been textured yet). |
Trying to make it home with a Zero on my tail... |
Climbing for the safety of the clouds. |
The AI "Saving Face" because I safely landed.
(Actually he stalled when he tried to pull up after chasing me at such a slow
speed). |
Heading for Vladivostok. |
My battered bird safely home (except for the fire).
Note the RH engine cowl. (Or lack thereof...) |
4 Image Series:
Enemy shipping found, gunfire exchanged. |
On the tarmac waiting for the next mission. |
Enemy gunners begin to get the range... |
A US pilot leaving on patrol teaching the British how to
use the Catalina. This plane found the Bismark... (Not sure what paint scheme she
wore). |
This does not, repeat not, look good. |
Exceeding the planes abilities. Note the flex in the
left wing. |
There is wing area left, but not enough for controlled
sustained flight. Time to jump. |
I fought off the zero, but am going down... |
An RNZAF PBY claws for the sky. |
"Leaving On Patrol" |
RNZAF leaving on the hunt (though I am not sure they
ever used the retro rockets). |
Staying in the clouds was one of the PBYs means of
safety. The PBY that spotted the Japanese fleet at Midway saw the ships, got into
the clouds. |
In some serious trouble... PBYs were easy targets.
They could take damage like this and still land and abandon ship!!! |
The PBY then ducked in and out for 2 hours relaying data
to Midway (so don't believe the movies about the PBY report of the "main Japanese
fleet" as being sketchy). |
Once the fuel leaked into the plane, fires could happen
almost anywhere, in this case, the port blister as well as the pylon. |
While the engines would burn, so would the wing pylon as
all fuel flowed through there. |
A clear view of the PBY carrying its torpedo payload. |
Would not want to be a member of the tail crew in this
plane. |
Front on view with the gear down. The shape of the
nose is wrong (from the physical model side, that's about the only thing...). |
Gear down beauty shot (too high to be landing). |
After a long patrol, home looks mighty good... |
